Breast implants are cosmetic medical devices that can be damaged. Both saline and silicone breast implants are made with a silicone shell that is filled with either saline or silicone gel. If this shell is punctured or it ruptures for any reason, the contents can leak out into the chest cavity. When this occurs, patients with these damaged implants will require a cosmetic breast repair. At Be That Beautiful™ Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, we offer breast implant rupture repair surgery for all types of implants.
Breast implants are not made to last a lifetime. While some can last 15-20 years or longer, it is expected that implants will need replacement eventually. After years in the body, an implant can begin to leak from wear. Trauma to the chest can also damage implants to the point that they rupture.
Symptoms of Breast Implant Leaks
The symptoms of a ruptured breast implant are different with saline and silicone implants. Saline implants will quickly deflate if they rupture. The saline is liquid that will leak out and be absorbed by the body. Saline is not dangerous, but the breast appearance will change drastically. If only one implant ruptures, the breasts will be uneven. A breast implant rupture repair surgery is needed to remove both implants and replace them if desired by the patient.
The symptoms of a silicone implant rupture are less evident. Silicone gel will leak out of the implant, but it usually will stay in the breast area. The breast may not look much different. Gummy bear implants are even more solid, which keeps the silicone in place. However, this can have health risks, which is why it is recommended that individuals with silicone implants have an MRI every three years to check for leaks or ruptures. Some patients will have symptoms, such as breast pain and changes to the breast shape and texture. If there is a rupture or leak, both implants should be removed.
