Breast augmentation with implants is one of the most requested cosmetic surgeries in the country. Enhancing the breast size and shape can have fantastic aesthetic results and give individuals more confidence in their appearance. Breast implants are considered very safe, and the majority of breast augmentation patients have no complications after their surgery. However, a small percentage of patients may believe they are having a reaction to their implants, referred to as breast implant illness. Be That Beautiful™ Plastic Surgery offers breast implant illness treatment at our facility in Los Angeles, CA.
What Is Breast Implant Illness?
Breast implant illness, or BII, is not a disease that can be diagnosed with testing. It is a description of symptoms that have been reported by some patients who received a breast augmentation with implants. It is important to note that the list of symptoms is very long and widespread. Many of these symptoms could be caused by other health conditions. Some of the most common reported symptoms include:
- Chronic fatigue
- Cognitive “fog”
- Headaches
- Skin rashes
- Depression or anxiety
- Insomnia
- Thyroid issues
- Hair loss
Individuals who experience these symptoms may or may not link them to their implant procedure. It is important that other causes of these health issues are explored by each patient’s primary physician. Diagnosis of BII is difficult, as there is not a specific test for this condition.
The theory on BII is that it is an autoimmune or allergic reaction to the implants. At this time, there is no data on the prevalence of BII among women with breast implants.
Breast implant illness treatment is limited, as not much is known about the cause of the condition. Removing the implants is one possible treatment, but it is not always successful in relieving the symptoms of BII.
If you are concerned about breast implant illness and want to discuss treatment options, contact our team at Be That Beautiful™ Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, CA, to schedule a BII consultation with Dr. Chaudhry to talk about treatment possibilities.
